Lessons Learned

With growth and experience, we recognize the importance of art in school.

Resulting from our recent sponsorship of Shadowlawn Elementary School at our 2019 Ajala Charitable Art Show, we uncovered a significant absence of meaningful instruction in the Arts within our local schools. For example, at Shadowlawn Art Instructors are shared. This relegates Art classes to only two each week. While we understand that traditional academics must be prioritized in the school’s finances, we also know that it is important to nurture and inspire talent and individual gifts in all forms.

We were moved to fill in the gap by providing music and art instruction for students between the ages of 12 to 18-year-old who attend schools within our shared community. As such, we are partnering with Artists that work in a variety of art media who have the skills and certification to teach. Our initial focus will be introductory music instruction, specifically guitar, piano, drums and voice lessons that ensure diverse cultural expressions.

With your help, we will provide up to twelve teens with 12 one-hour sessions of tutoring in music or art. We believe that this project will create opportunities, inspire creativity, and improve academic abilities. Once this pilot program is complete, we intend to increase the number of students that we serve. We will target at-risk youth who share a desire to take advantage of all the program’s offerings. This project will be administered through local Schools, City Recreation Centers, and Community Libraries.

We offer a range of programs to young artists within our shared community.

Art Journaling:  Art Journaling explores the different reflective and artistic forms of journaling using a combination of collage-making, mixed media techniques (i.e., painting, drawing, magazine images, etc.), digital work, and written prompts. The series will explore a form of creative self-care practices.

AJAH Teen Art Program 2021 - "COVID Art Expressions"

This summer, we challenged the AJAH Teens to:

CREATE A PIECE OF ART THAT DEPICTS YOUR FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS TOWARDS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. GIVE YOUR WORK A TITLE. SEND YOUR ARTWORK WITH A STATEMENT.

The submission on the right is entitled, "COVID Cat." This was submitted by Kofi Olatunji, age 12 who participated in Ms. Beth's Mixed Media class this summer!

Watch this space! We will share more expressions as they come in...
